Aspiring to achieve our best: moving forward together!

Newsletter | 2nd January 2024

We would like to welcome all the children and parents back to school for the start of the new term. As you will see the work on the roof has been completed and we now have a new roof which doesn't leak. Both Pearce and Devon County Council praised the children and staff for how well they had managed with the building work. They were adaptable and flexible which allowed the work to progress as planned. The pedestrian gate now opens inwards so please walk around the right hand side of the barn and not through the carpark.

We would like to remind all children that snacks at breaktime should be healthy, a piece of fruit or vegetables. The school council and the eco committee are keen to reduce our plastic waste. Drinks bottles which children access during lesson time should contain tap water only. They can have squash at lunchtime.

Thank you to all the children who have arrived at school wearing the correct school uniform. On PE days school PE kits should be worn along with their school jumper, not a hoody. The school council have noticed that not all children wear the correct uniform and are keen to work with the staff to make sure everyone wears the correct uniform. We do have a selection of second hand uniform if anyone needs any items. Please see Mrs Chappell if you need any uniform.

Miss Kneller had a planned operation on her ACL over the Christmas holidays and Mrs Emanuel is covering her class while she recovers. We wish Miss Kneller a speedy recovery and hope to see her soon.

Christmas Singing & Dancing

On Friday 15th December, pupils from our singing and dance clubs performed in front of a large crowd at the Tiverton Pannier market. Singing club sang "Let it be Christmas" and "Somewhere only we know" and the dancers performed enthusiastically to "Underneath the Tree" and "Rockin' Robin". Everyone came together to sing "We wish you a merry Christmas".

The event was well supported by members of the community and lots of our parents too. It had a really lovely, festive feel and the crowd showed their appreciation with lots of applause and positive comments to both staff and the children.

How to make life happier in 2024

Let's make this year a happier one. We may not be able to change what's going on in the world, but our daily actions still make a big difference. Here are some ideas to help you get 2024 off to the best possible start.

Coffee Mornings for parents of children with SEND at HPS

Now that the building works have finished, we have space once again to host some events for parents of children with SEND. We look forward to having the opportunity to meet with you, to discuss particular areas of interest over a cup of tea or coffee. These will be informal, friendly sessions and will be open to anyone whose child is on our SEN register. We intend for the sessions to be positive and collaborative, so that parents feel both supported and better informed.

We will need parents to book in advance, as we can only really accommodate about twenty parents at a time in our Community Room. If many parents wish to attend, we may need to allocate places over the term, so that every parent can attend at least once. The meetings will be hosted by Mrs Alphey, our SENDCo, and Miss Ford, our Assistant SENDCo – though we will invite visiting speakers from time to time.

Dates for the Spring term are as follows:

Tuesday 30th January 9:30-11am – An introduction to DIAS, with visiting speaker Katy Isaac from DIAS. Katy will explain how DIAS can support families and young people, and there will hopefully also be an opportunity for parents to discuss anything specific afterwards, on a one-to-one basis.

Tuesday 27th February 9-10am – Supporting children with autistic spectrum difficulties at home and at school.

Tuesday 26th March 9-10am – Supporting children with speech and language needs at home and at school.

We have picked Tuesday mornings in the first instance, though we are open to suggestions for alternative timeslots for sessions in the summer term. We know that Tuesday morning timeslots may not suit everyone who wishes to attend. We are also open to suggestions for topics you would like to discuss. To book sessions, or to share your suggestions with us, please click https://forms.office.com/e/7Rc4Dj0Rz4

Do you have access to your child’s passport online?

Most of our parents who have children with SEND already have a log in to Edukey Provision Map software, to see how we currently support their child(ren) at school. A child’s passport has details of their strengths, interests and likes as well as information about their areas of difficulty, their dislikes and useful teaching strategies. We often ask parents to contribute to their child’s passport and it is useful for all parents to have access to them online, so that information can be checked at any time and we can be as consistent as possible between home and school. If you do not yet have a login for some reason, do email ruthalphey@heathcoat.devon.sch.uk and we can easily set this up for you.

Plastic chocolate tubs

We will be collecting the large plastic chocolate, sweets and cracker tubs to be recycled. Some of the money from the recycling by Devon Contract Waste goes to Dartmoor Zoo. Please leave them at school by 29th January.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Phoenix as his story "When Thomas the Tank visited King Charles 3rd" has made it through to the next stage of BBC 500 words competition.
