Science Week

Last Wednesday, we had a special visitor from Sciencedipity to celebrate Science Week. She made explosions, elephant toothpaste, changed the colour of water and Mrs Sullivan even set fire to her hands! We all really enjoyed the show.

Thank you to all the parents who contributed to pay for this, especially those who paid above the asked amount. We really appreciate your kindness.

Year 3 & 4 Mixed Football

Last Thursday, Year 3 & 4 had a great morning at THS taking part in a mixed football tournament. Team A reached the final and were the runners up, while Team B narrowly missed out on the final and achieved third place. 'Player of the Match' for Team A was Flynn for being a great team player, while 'Player of the Match' for Team B was the WHOLE TEAM for showing fantastic teamwork, great communication and superb sportsmanship - Mrs Warren was very proud of them all!
A special mention goes to Matthew and Flynn for great team management and to Travis and Grace R for superb football skills.
Well done everyone!

Comic Relief

Thank you to everyone who supported Comic Relief by wearing something red on 15th March. We raised an amazing £160.54

Social media posts

Please can we remind parents that the school has a social media policy which can be found on our website and that posting negative comments about the school on social media is a breach of our policy.

Ambassador Volunteer programme

We are hoping to set up a parent support group for local parents, through the Ambassador Volunteer programme. This parent group would work alongside DiAS and the Parent Carer Forum to provide information and support in accessing local services and meeting children's needs. We have invited Sarah, the Ambassador Volunteer Coordinator for Devon, to explain more about the programme at our SEND coffee morning on Tuesday 21st May from 9-10:30am. We do hope that many of you will be able to join us. Do put the date in your diary; details of how to book a place will be shared nearer the time. In the meantime, you can find out more at The Ambassador Volunteer Programme - Devon Information Advice and Support (devonias.org.uk)

Family and friends information and Q&A event

19 March 2024 7-8pm

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects about 1 in 15 people – 2 children in a class of 30. Despite being as common as ADHD and much more common than Autism, DLD does not have the same level of recognition. This is particularly frustrating because DLD has a huge impact on many areas of life, not just a child’s access to learning. Engage with DLD – E-DLD - aims to connect people with DLD and their families to academic research and they hold regular online events for both professionals and families.

We have asked all Devon SENCOs to signpost the upcoming Family and Friends Information and Q&A Event on Tuesday 19 March 2024, 7-8pm GMT. This free online event aims to help families to understand what DLD is and what it means for them/their child. Stephen Parsons (a speech and language therapist and chair of NAPLIC) will join the E-DLD team for an easy-to-understand explanation of DLD followed by a Q&A.

The E-DLD website additionally hosts a huge amount of research and resources about DLD that will support SENCOs in the understanding of this area of neurodiversity as well as supporting children within their settings.

More information can be found at What's on? | Engage with DLD (engage-dld.com)

Attendance

At HPS we are keen to show democracy in action. Following on from the recent assemblies, during which children discussed why attendance is important, and we explained the pros and cons of attendance rewards, our amazing school councillors met today to feedback their class views about rewards. As well as hearing the children's ideas, we have the views of parents who came to the attendance coffee morning. We will soon be feeding back the outcomes. We are teaching children that they have a voice - and they can be part of changes within the school.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Edith from year 5, who competed in a Gymnastics Competition with her Club ‘Exe Valley Gymnastics School’. It was a lovely afternoon, filled with brilliant sportsmanship. Everyone was thrilled when Edith won a Silver medal in Under 11 girls gymnastics for the South West.
