Year 1 Computing

Year 1 have been learning about algorithms by using the Bee-bot online app.

Year 1 Exmoor zoo

On Tuesday 26th March year one enjoyed a visit from Exmoor zoo and found it really interesting. Rob from the zoo brought some interesting animals with him, and we could look at them closely and touch them if we wanted to. We learnt a lot about classifying animals which is helping us greatly with our science topic on Animals. Thank you to all the parents who paid for this visit to take place.

Easter Bonnets

A huge thank you to everyone who brought in Easter bonnets and eggs, on the last day of term, we raised £79. It was nearly impossible to decide on our winners...but we had to!

KS1 (including nursery) winner: Silas 1D runner up: George 1D
KS2 winner: Josh 6ST runner up: Tomas 3/4CP
special mentions: Irisa 3/4 MP, Kaydie 1D, Alfie 2P

Exmoor Challenge

Despite the weather forecast, our budding Year 6 pupils spent the first hour learning to orientate their maps and talk through the route card before going out to face the elements. The 11 Year 6 pupils, Miss Higginson and Mrs Soper kept their spirits high and despite wind, torrential rain, hail, even some blue sky and a burst of sunshine, they walked really well over the uneven terrain, gloopy mud and bonded together as a team. A very enjoyable journey with songs and poems being created along the way!!

Year 6 SATs meeting

We will be holding a SATs meeting to share key dates and information, on Tuesday 23rd April at 3.30pm-3.45pm. Please attend if you can. The information slides will be emailed to all year 6 parents following the meeting.

Coffee Mornings for parents of children with SEND at HPS

Our coffee mornings are informal, friendly sessions and are open to anyone whose child is on our SEN register. Toddlers and babies are welcome to join us. Our workshops are positive and collaborative sessions, so that parents feel both supported and better informed. We always find time for a drink and a biscuit too!

The meetings are hosted by Mrs Alphey, our SENDCo, and Miss Ford, our Assistant SENDCo – though we invite visiting speakers from time to time.

Dates for the Summer term are as follows:

Tuesday 30th April 9am-10:30amSpeech and Language Development in the Early Years. This is a repeat of last term’s workshop, this time with a real focus on our youngest children (those in Nursery, Reception and KS1). This workshop would also be of interest to parents of older children. Do come along to find out more about how to support your child’s speaking, listening, communication and social interaction.

Tuesday 21st May 9am to 10:30am The Ambassador Volunteer programme. Our visiting speaker, Sarah Lord, will invite HPS parents to set up a parent support group aligned to DiAS and the Parent Carer Forum in Devon. Training will be provided! This is a really exciting opportunity for our school – do come along to find out more!

Tuesday 26th June 9am to 10:30am DiAS: choosing a school for your child. Visiting speaker Katy Isaac from DiAS is coming back, this time to explore what to look for when choosing a school for your child with SEN.

Tuesday 9th July 9 to 10:30am: Writing social stories. This workshop has been requested by one of our parents. We will explore the theory behind social stories, and how they can support children with ASD to manage change. Then we will look at some examples, before trying some for ourselves. By the end of the session, we hope to have written the stories you need for your children before the summer holidays. All are welcome!

Do add these dates to your diary. We will open up the booking form one workshop at a time. To book the 30th April session, please go to https://forms.office.com/e/7Rc4Dj0Rz4

An introduction to DIAS, with visiting speaker Katy Isaac from DIAS. Katy will explain how DIAS can support families and young people, and there will hopefully also be an opportunity for parents to discuss anything specific afterwards, on a one-to-one basis.

Do you have access to your child’s passport online?

Most of our parents who have children with SEND already have a log in to Edukey Provision Map software, to see how we currently support their child(ren) at school. A child’s passport has details of their strengths, interests and likes as well as information about their areas of difficulty, their dislikes and useful teaching strategies. We often ask parents to contribute to their child’s passport and it is useful for all parents to have access to them online, so that information can be checked at any time and we can be as consistent as possible between home and school. If you do not yet have a login for some reason, do email ruthalphey@heathcoat.devon.sch.uk and we can easily set this up for you.

Extra-Curricular clubs at HPS

This week the children are being informed about the extra-curricular clubs that are on offer for this coming half term. Please discuss the clubs with your child and encourage them to sign up if there is something they might enjoy. Extra-curricular clubs can extend their interests as well as their friendship groups.

Football Contract

At the start of the academic year, we talked to children about one of our TRAIN values and the Football Association's value of RESPECT. All children who want to play football were asked to sign a class copy of the Football Contract. It is then displayed in classrooms as a reminder about expectations for how we play football fairly, and show respect to one another.

A copy of the football contract will be emailed to parents this week, so that all children and parents have it as a point of reference.

Go4Schools

If you do not have access to Go4Schools, or are having trouble logging in, please let us know and the admin team will assist you in getting onto the system. Go for schools is where reports are shared and you can access information such as your child's attendance. To access Go4Schools please log on via the Go4Schools website and not via the app.

Special Census meal

We are showing children how democracy works in real life. We are asking them to vote for their favourite school meal so this can be served on our special Census day - Thursday 16th May.

Please can you speak to your child about their FAVOURITE school meal so that they can vote on it at school. To do this, please look at the CURRENT menu. Ask them - from this menu, what is your favourite main? What is your favourite Vegetarian option? What is your favourite pudding from the choices that are currently on offer? Voting is taking place in classes this week, and we will soon let you know the winning meals.

The winning meal will be served on Thursday 16th May.
