Physical Education

Our Vision for PE

At Heathcoat Primary School we are passionate about ensuring every child has the skills necessary to achieve in PE, sport and life through teaching children the physical literacy and emotional thinking skills they will need. This unique and child-centred approach is achieved through our REAL PE, REAL GYM AND REAL DANCE scheme which we follow for PE lessons. The REAL PE approach focuses on teaching pupils about the 5 PE cogs: physical, social, cognitive, personal and creative. Each of these cogs is focused on each term in a carefully planned progression of skills. As the children move through the school REAL PE, REAL GYM AND REAL DANCE are taught alongside teaching games and traditional sports to develop their skills further for later life and give them a thorough grounding in sports and healthy living.

Nursery

Our nursery children work through the Create Development programme for foundation stage particularly concentrating on the fundamental movement skills such as balancing on one leg, safe jumping and landing and catching and throwing.
Activities are then provided within the inside and outside environment for children for children to work on their physical development including both gross and fine motor skills.

Reception and Key Stage One

Children follow the ‘Real PE’ programme by Create Development in Reception, Year 1 and 2. Again children work on their fundamental movement skills that are so important in their physical development. The children work through the progression with their teachers at their own pace with challenges and adaptations brought in for children on an individual basis to enable all children to achieve and be challenged.    In the autumn term children also do a ‘Real Gym’ unit focusing on body shape, travel, balance and rotation. In the spring term we do a ‘Real Dance’ unit focusing on moving our bodies in different shapes and circles to a variety of different music.

Key Stage Two

The children continue their ‘Real PE’ journey. In the autumn term they also do ‘Real Gym’ units based on pathways, rotation, balances and flight. They create sequences on their own as well as in groups on the floor and large apparatus. In the spring term we have a ‘Real Dance’ unit which develops their creativity and choreography. They work on solo and group sequences incorporating circles and lifts to a variety of different music.

As the games lessons progress the children get a deeper understanding of how to outwit and defend opponents. Children are encouraged to analyse their own and others performances to help them improve their work. In upper KS2 the fundamental movement skills and cogs are a still key focus. However there is more emphasis on working collaboratively as young coaches and leaders across sports.

Enrichment

Throughout the year we have a variety of clubs on offer at lunchtime or after school which help the children further develop their skills in different sports.  Clubs can include running, tag rugby, gymnastics, kwik-cricket, rounders and dance.

We strive to provide opportunities for healthy competition through our inter-house as well as inter-school events. Our children are divided up into 6 house teams, named after the local rivers and pupils are awarded house points for their team as part of our whole school reward system.

We use these houses to inspire healthy competition against each other across a range of sporting activities. We aim to link our inter-house competitions to national and international sporting events such as the football and rugby world cups. At the end of the year, we have our annual sports day where the Houses compete against each other to win the cup!

We also regularly attend sports festivals and competitions at Tiverton High School and Blundell’s School; including multi-skills festivals for our key stage 1 children and basketball, handball, netball, cricket, tag rugby, tennis and football for children in key stage 2 children.

We take part in the Wilcombe Wobbler cross- country race, the Exmoor Challenge moorland walk as well as entering teams in charity fun runs, swimming competitions and regional tournaments.

Our balance bikes provide our reception children with the opportunity to develop their co-ordination and balance skills to help them become an independent rider. These skills are further progressed through our bikeability programme in years 3,4,5 & 6.

We have a successful Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) programme which links closely to the geography curriculum. As the children progress through school, they start to explore maps, learning about how they are used as well as their symbols and features.  They learn how to orientate a map, follow a route, create a route and complete an orienteering course on the school site. In Year 6 as part of their transition to High school they take part in the Tiverton challenge, walking in teams between all the local primary schools in a competitive event.

Swimming

Being lucky enough to be so close to lots of natural water resources we realise the importance of a thorough swimming development programme. Children receive a 6 week programme of lessons each year in years 3,4,5 and 6. Our vision embraces the Devon Swim 100 swimming schemes helping children gain water confidence, so they feel safe in and near the water. Our aim is for all children to be able to swim at least 100m by the end of year 6. In the summer term we take part in the Tiverton Schools swimming gala.

Active lunchtimes

During break and lunch times we provide a variety of equipment to extend our children’s learning, allowing them plenty of opportunities to practise a range of sporting skills. We also train some of our Year 5 & 6 pupils to become ‘Sports Leaders’.  They learn to plan, organise and run activites during lunchtimes for the younger children.  We use “smiles of participation” across all areas of physical activity, to encourage and develop a more positive spirit in playing games with one another.  For more information click on link – Smiles.docx
